Simple Past

Level: Intermediate 
 
The simple past is used to express an action that started in the past and ended in the past. 
 
Positive Form: I ate 
Negative Form: I didn't eat 
Question Form: Did I eat? 
 
For regular verbs just add "ed". For irregular verbs you can use this table:

When adding "ed", you should notice these exceptions: 
If the final letter is an "e", just add "d" Ex: decide --> decided 
If the final letter is "y" after a consonant, the "y" becomes "i" Ex: identify --> identified 
 
Finally, remember: If you want to speak English fluently, you should focus on listening. Even English grammar you can learn it by listening (it's the best solution)

Most English students start to learn English with only one goal which is "to speak English fluently", then they follow some boring methods (grammar, memorizing word lists) then they end with a different goal from the goal they started with. 
 
Always put in your mind that <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/08/tips-on-how-to-speak-english-fluently.html">speaking English fluently</a> is the most important thing in your English learning career, English grammar and all other methods are just useful things and ways which can lead you to the goal. 
 
Studying <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/06/english-grammar.html">English grammar</a> makes English students think only about grammar and the structure of the language. 
 
Please tell me: which one is the best: to speak English fluently with correct grammar without knowing grammar Or to know everything about English grammar but don't speak English fluently?

In order to speak English fluently, you should have a huge vocabulary in your brain, you should use grammar correctly and you should speak English "without thinking". 
 
If you understand this idea, you will ask yourself: how can I improve my English Grammar? How can I improve my English vocabulary? 
 
When of my readers E-mailed me today and said: "i want speak english i like it but i have some problemes like grammer and vocabulary help me please".

The present tense is the first thing that you should know if you want to study English grammar. Actually, even if you don't want to study it!! 
 
The present tense is the most used tense in English, or in all languages. We use it everyday. If you want to speak English without knowing the present tense, you'll never do it (I said without knowing, not without studying, because it is possible to speak English without studying the present tense, even without studying <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/06/english-grammar.html">English grammar</a>) 
 
We use the present tense when: 
-Something is always true  ex: monkeys eat bananas 
-Something happen very often  ex: He wakes up at 8 o'clock 
-Something happening right now ex: He sees a bird now (but if it is a long action, we use the present continuous) 
 The first thing you should know when studying the present tense (or every new tense) is to know how to use it with the auxiliaries "to be" and "to have"

they are                                      they have 
 
With the other verbs you let the verb as it is. Only with the third person (he, she, it) you add an "s". ex: I like, He likes

In today's article, We are change our habits a little bit; 
We are going to study <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/06/english-grammar.html">English grammar </a>!! 
For some of you who have read my article about <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/06/english-grammar.html">English grammar</a>, They should be chocked right now! 
 
Well, I've seen that many English students do want to study grammar, I don't why but I've said that English Grammar is not so terrible, but it is only useful for a specific kind of English students. 
 
So, read my articles about grammar if you ONLY believe that English grammar is done for you. 
If you don't know whether English grammar is good for you or not, you can read my article <a href="http://fastest-english.blogspot.com/2010/06/english-grammar.html">English Grammar </a>. 
 
If you're reading right now, it means that you found English grammar good for you, ok? 
 
So, let's start with the past tense: 
 
We use the past tense to describe or talk about something that happened in the past, not only this but also finished in the past. 
For example, if you started traveling one hour ago, and you're still traveling right now, it's NOT past tense. 
But if you started traveling one hour ago, and it's finished: This is past tense. 
 
Now you know when to use the past tense, so I don't want to see you using the past tense instead of the present or...ok? 
 
Well, how can you get the past tense? 
It's simple, but before you should know that there are two kinds of verbs: regular verbs and irregular verbs. 
How can you a verb is regular or irregular? well, this is the biggest problem, you should know it before, you should have found the verb before, you should have a list of irregular verbs in your head!! (is it difficult?) 
 
For many English students, they say: "I can't use the past tense, I can't know the irregular verbs, there are a lot of verbs, I can't memorize all English verbs!!" 
Yes of course, no one can memorize all the English verbs even native speakers!! but you should know at least the verbs that you use everyday, verbs that you use in your field... 
 
Once you know if a verb is regular or irregular, the next step is this: 
Regular verb --> ad "ed" at the end of the verb, for example: to travel--> he traveled, (do the same with all the pronouns) 
 
Irregular verb--> no way!! you should memorize them.

In this post, we are going to talk a little bit about English grammar. 
But first, what is the fastest way to speak English? I'm asking you (comment) 
 
Many students think that English grammar is only way to speak English or to LEARN to speak English, so they start to learn grammar, they buy all the grammar books in the market, they start reading these English grammar books, and finally they don't succeed! 
 
What is the reason they failed to speak English? They studied English but they failed, is there something secret? 
 
Of course there is nothing special, for example; when you are hungry what should you do? of course you should eat! 
 
Imagine someone who feels hungry, and don't eat but he drinks. what do you think? of course he will still hungry!! 
 
That is the same with learning to speak English and English grammar!!!! 
Did you know this idea before? did you know it? I'm at 75% that you didn't know it!!! 
 
English learning is very easy but many English schools are trying to make it very difficult, I don't know why but they should have commercial goals! 
 
I didn't say that English schools are useless for everybody, but they are useful for specific categories, not for all English students. 
 
To illustrate  this point, I'm going to make this idea clear for you: 
The first thing you should have with your English learning is a GOAL: 
what is your Goal when you learn English? Do you want to speak English? or do you want to develop your writing skills? 
 
It's very simple, if you want to speak English don't go to English schools. If you want to develop your writing abilities join an English school and learn grammar... 
 
An English student posted a comment telling me that my English is very simple. In fact he has right, my English is very simple, I'm making it simple to help all the students to understand easily. In fact this is my method to help English students, and I will discuss about this idea (to use easy English) in a next article so don't miss it.

Never Study Grammar

In my last article I told you not to study grammar, but you don’t want to make grammar mistakes when you are speaking! 
In fact, by studying grammar you will make it harder for you to speak, because once you’re speaking you will think about grammar rules and this makes you very upset, and will also teach you to don’t speak unless your phrase is correct and this, of course, is the biggest mistake students do! 
Studying grammar is very dangerous; the right way to learn grammar is to choose a method where you learn it without studying it, because if you study it you will never learn it! 
Here, in this article, I will tell you about some of the right methods you can do to learn grammar easily and without studying it: 
First of all if you’re studying grammar right now, stop doing it, and wait for about 2 to 3 weeks before you start leaning with the right method. 
If you are joining an English school, you should stop immediately or go on with your school. 
Before beginning, I’m going to ask you a question: what kind of books do you read?? 
Think about it in a few seconds or minutes and than go on reading. 
To make easier for you to answer I’m going to give you some choices: grammar books, stories, novels, stories for children, vocabulary books, newspapers …etc 
If your answer is one of these: grammar books, vocabulary books, my advice for you are to sell them to another person or throw them over the window. 
If your answer is newspapers: my advice for you is to keep them away from you for a moment (6 months at least) 
If your answer is novels, stories, stories for children: my advice is to continue reading them, they are great! 
Now, I am going to explain more about this situation: 
Grammar and vocabulary books are your enemy right now, you must learn to hate them as soon as possible, they both teach you to think ABOUT English Not to SPEAK English, and so they are useless! 
They also spend you a lot of time, without any improvement, and they are also school’s materials so they are not good! You should learn to hate them. 
Keep them away from you, don’t keep them in your house, and never again open a grammar book or vocabulary book, NEVER! 
Grammar books teach you to think about English, and vocabulary books tell you to memorize word lists, and you can never do this! 
In a real conversation (not in an exam or an E-mail or letter…etc) you don’t have the time to think about grammar rules or to remember words that’s why you need to learn them with a powerful method! 
Newspapers are good but they are too difficult for you right now, you will use your dictionary more than one time if you read them, they are also difficult for native speakers so keep them away from you until you learn basic vocabulary, and to speak without thinking and grammar rules without studying them. 
Finally, novels and stories are the best for you right now, they are easy to read so you don’t need a dictionary, even if there are some words you don’t now the meaning, you will understand them without using a dictionary and this helps you to get them deeper into your brain! 
Even if both novels and stories are great for learning without studying, I do recommend novels for many raisons: 
The first raison is because they are long, so, you read a difficult word more than one time, and this is a powerful way to learn vocabulary without memorizing, if you don’t understand a word just relax and continue reading without opening your dictionary, maybe the next time you will understand it. 
By seeing the same word in different phrases you will learn it deeper into your brain without the need of a dictionary and this is very powerful! 
Just because novels are long, you will get more familiar with the writer because each person has some words and repeats them. (Ex: read my articles and you will see that I have some words I repeat a lot, if you read a lot of my articles you will understand me 100%) 
If you like the novels you are reading you will not feel that you are studying, so you need to choose novels you like before starting to read. 
Farther in one of my articles, as a bonus, I’m going to give you some titles of great novels I recommend you to read, and I will even give you some chapters! I think you will enjoy them. 
Another thing why novels are great is because they use real English NOT textbook English, and that’s what you need to learn! 
You will read a lot of idioms, slangs, common phrases. In short: casual English! 
You need to begin with easy novels and than go step by step to more and more difficult novels to improve. 
So, without thinking that you are learning grammar or vocabulary, and having fun at the same time, you improve step by step to get to a great level in English! 
NEVER STUDY GRAMMAR is a long article, but I just talked about one method, in the next articles, I will tell you about some other methods even easier and more powerful! 
In this article, I just talked about reading novels; in the next articles you will see some miraculous methods!
